The History

The legend lives on every day.

When visionary businessman Walter H. Morgan opened the La Quinta Hotel in 1926, a star was born. The secluded destination, then a 20-room property, instantly became the famed hideaway for celebrities of stage and screen. The combination of geographical location and low-key glamour exuded an allure that continues. To this day, guests and Members who seek a welcome respite marvel at the propertyís power to revitalize and restore.

Many consider the La Quinta Resort a labor of love, brought to life with authentic Spanish Colonial hacienda-style architecture, hand-formed adobe bricks and roof tiles, and numerous thoughtful details combined with an exceptional service culture. Small wonder that, year after year, luminaries like Greta Garbo and Clark Gable, Bette Davis and Errol Flynn, Katherine Hepburn, Frank Capra and many others have escaped to the ultimate hideaway in the desert. Indeed, from unbridled romance to inspired screenwriting, the resortís comfortable accommodations and magical environs have set the stage for decades of stories.

After the concept for The Citrus Club was conceived, construction took place nearby from 1988 to 1994. During this time, The Citrus Club operated in a temporary location behind the 9th green. As many of the original trees that could be preserved remained intact, enhancing an idyllic locale graced by the panorama of the mountains. Pete Dye, true to fashion, incorporated the awe-inspiring mountain views as the background to his highly playable course design.

Of the courses connected to La Quinta Resort, The Citrus offered not only a country club but also the first purely private golf course with homesites on both sides of the fairway, located off the resort property. It provided a singular destination golf course venue. In 1995, after much anticipation, the Members-only Private Clubhouse opened, offering a preferred new venue for valued Members. Come, experience the legend for yourself.

Today, The Citrus offers the ultimate Club, exclusively associated with the 796-room resort. Perfectly situated at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, it is internationally acclaimed for its championship golf, tennis, Spa and Private Membership. Come, experience the legend for yourself.
